January 27, 2019 • The 2019 Super Bowl is officially a week away, and it sounds like Disney fans have plenty of time to get prepared for something awesome. According to a new report from Ad Age, the Walt Disney Company is expected to air an “undisclosed” number of spots during next Sunday’s big game. The report does not outline how many spots the company has taken out, or what exactly they will be promoting, but it does hint that they will probably air sometime between the coin toss and the end of the game. 2 – Disney to Create Inaugural ‘Zootopia’Themed Land
January 27, 2019 • Brace for the possibility of visiting a famed gazelle and a sloth-operated DMV on your next theme park vacation, because Disney’s first-ever “Zootopia”-themed land is opening at Shanghai Disneyland. The new area will be themed to the exciting cityscape made famous by the Academy Award-winning film, compete with and a colorful skyline and iconic details. Expect plenty of characters — or in this case, citizens — as well as face-to-face interaction with the film’s stars Nick Wilde and Judy Hopps as part of a brand-new ride involving the residents of Zootopia’s bustling namesake town. 3 – Maleficent Float That Caught Fire Returns to Disney Parade
January 25, 2019 • Maleficent, the fire-breathing parade float that actually caught fire last May, has returned to the Walt Disney World parade lineup. The dragon from Sleeping Beauty was a spectacular float that unexpectedly burst into flames in front of theme park guests at the Magic Kingdom on May 11. No one was injured, but plenty of social media users recorded images of Maleficent’s head on fire. Read More
4 – Disney Is Expanding Its New Shanghai Theme Park
January 24, 2019 • Shanghai Disney Resort has only been open for two-and-a-half years, but the complex is already getting ready for a second expansion. Executives announced this week that the entertainment giant is adding an eighth land to the Shanghai Disneyland park, designed around the animated movie Zootopia. It will be the first Zootopia-themed area at any Disney park around the world. The $5.5 billion park opened in June 2016; last year, it added a land based on Toy Story. Read More
5 – Lin-Manuel Miranda In Talks To Write First Latina Princess in a Disney Movie
January 22, 2019 • He’s proved that minorities can make bank on Broadway, and now Hamiltoncreator Lin-Manuel Miranda is in talks about creating the first Latina princess to star in a Disney movie, Page Six reports. Disney has been criticized for the slow pace at which it has moved to include minorities in its big budget kid’s movies, and it is notable that Miranda was closely involved—as music co-writer—on the film Moana, which told the story of a Polynesian girl who battles ingrained sexist attitudes in a story drawn from the mythology of Samoa, Tonga and other South Pacific islands.
