1 – Box Office: ‘Wreck-It Ralph 2’ Is Disney’s First Blockbuster Animated Sequel
November 25, 2018 • In new release news that isn’t Creed II, Walt Disney’s Ralph Breaks the Internet earned a near-record $84.5 million in its first five days of domestic release. That’s right in between Moana ($82m in 2016) and Frozen ($93m in 2013) among the top three Thanksgiving launches of all time, sans inflation of course. Actually, the $56m Fri-Sun launch for Wreck-It Ralph 2 is still right in between Tangled ($48m in 2000/$55m adjusted) and Moana ($56.6m in 2016/$58m adjusted). Point being, the John C. Reilly/Sarah Silverman/Gal Gadot sequel played exactly like a Disney Thanksgiving toon. It was a bit frontloaded (4.56 x its $18.5m Wednesday), but that’s only an issue if it craters after the holiday. Read More
2 – Disney Is Already Winning Big With Its New Lion King Trailer
November 25, 2018 • Only 24 hours after posting the teaser trailer for the new live-action/CGI Lion King—on Thanksgiving no less—Disney already had a lot to celebrate. And the film doesn’t even hit theaters until next summer. In 24 hours, the trailer got 224.6 million global views, making it the second most viewed trailer from any studio in that time frame. 3 – First look at Disney World’s new Lightning McQueen show
November 23, 2018 • Walt Disney World is opening four new attractions next year at its Disney’s Hollywood Studios theme park. The headliners are, of course, the two new rides in the upcoming Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge land — Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run and Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance — whose names Disney revealed at last weekend’s Destination D event in Orlando. And then there’s the first-ever Mickey Mouse-themed dark ride, Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway, which opens in the old Great Movie Ride space in the Chinese Theater sometime late next year. 4 – Christmas TV stops: Disney World, Rockefeller Center
November 25, 2018 • Christmas will be showcased in specials this week that take viewers from Walt Disney World Resort to Rockefeller Center to John Legend’s neighborhood. The lineup: “The Wonderful World of Disney: Magical Holiday Celebration” lets viewers visit Walt Disney World and Disneyland from 9 to 11 p.m. Thursday on ABC. The hosts are Jordan Fisher of “Dancing With the Stars: Juniors” and Sarah Hyland of “Modern Family.” Jesse Palmer hosts from Disneyland.
