Ode to The Disney Churro

Who can resist the hypnotic spiral of sweet-dough; deep-fried to perfection, and coated in cinnamon and sugar that is the Disney Churro? Every wish you could possibly have will come true by casting one of these pastry wands of goodness into your mouth. Seriously, the Disney Churro is one of the most magical snacks offered at Disneyland and Walt Disney World. This article will examine why, highlight ways to enjoy the snack of sultans, and provide you with a recipe (with gluten-free and low-glycemic options) so that you don’t have to wait for your next Disney trip to enjoy one.

What is a “Churro?”

Churros, also called the “Spanish doughnut” are a deep-fried pastry based snack. They are popular in the United States at theme parks, fairs, and carnivals but are also highly popular in Mexico, Spain, France, Portugal, Philippines, and Latin America (including Brazil and Spanish-speaking Caribbean islands.)

The exact origin of the churros is unknown. One claim is that they were brought to Europe from China by the Portuguese, however, another is that they originated from Spanish shepherds since they were easy to make and fry in an open fire, making it an easy staple for the nomadic shepherding life.

Instructions
  1. Combine 1 cup of water with the butter or margarine and the salt in a saucepan and bring to a boil over high heat.
  2. Using a wooden spoon, stir in flour.
  3. Reduce the heat to low and stir vigorously until the mixture forms a ball, about 1 minute.
  4. Remove the dough from the heat and, while stirring constantly, gradually beat the eggs into the dough.
  5. Heat about 2 inches of oil in a heavy, high-sided pot over medium-high heat until the oil reaches 360 degrees F.
  6. Mix the sugar with the cinnamon on a plate and reserve.
  7. Meanwhile, spoon the churro dough into a pastry bag fitted with a large tip.
  8. Squeeze a 4- inch strip of dough into the hot oil. Repeat, frying 3 or 4 strips at a time.
  9. Fry the churros, turning them once, until golden brown, about 2 minutes per side.
  10. Transfer the cooked churros to a plate lined with paper towels to drain.
  11. When the churros are just cool enough to handle, roll them in the cinnamon-sugar.
