Ask Disney Adulting: Are There Tunnels Under Disney World?

Are there tunnels under Walt Disney World? If so, what are they for? Well, yes! There is a tunnel system underneath the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World called the Utilidors, short for “Utility Corridors.”We’ve collected some fast facts about the Utilidors, go let’s go underground, shall we?

  • Unlike the onstage areas of the parks, the tunnels are strictly utilitarian in style and are not decorated. This is also true of most of the backstage areas, as the line between where you have to be “on stage and in character.”
  • The Utilidors have wayfaring signs throughout the tunnels to help you find your way. Each land’s tunnels are a different color, and each sign has a different font on the signage in each land helped those that are color-blind.
  • There are a large number of pipes that run along the top of the ceiling throughout the system, some carrying water, HVAC, and, most interestingly, a pneumatic garbage system. This is why you don’t see custodians pushing garbage around the Magic Kingdom, as you see in other theme parks.

    • According to modern legend, Walt Disney was bothered by the sight of a cowboy walking through California Disneyland’s Tomorrowland en route to his post in Frontierland. He felt that such a sight detracted from the guest experience.
    • The tunnels were built for one main reason: to facilitate the unseen operations of the park without creating distractions for the guests, and to allow cast members in costume to only be seen in their own land.
    • When the park first opened, they used to pump artificial scents out into the air to entice customers to enter food shops. While this no longer goes on, the canisters holding the scents are still installed along the ceiling in the tunnels.
    • Although there is music playing in the tunnels, it is not ever Disney music. It’s usually a radio station chosen by popular vote.
    • Given the proximity to sea level, the tunnels were instead built on the ground level, then covered by dirt scooped out of the nearby lagoon. You’re technically on the second floor of the Magic Kingdom throughout most of the park.
    • Lastly, the only official way you can enter the Utilidors as a guest is to take one of the backstage tours.
